Research support

Research assistance

Contact your librarian for research assistance.

The library offers support to the uOttawa community throughout the research cycle. To learn more about your rights as an author, trends in scholarly publishing, venues for disseminating your work, and methods of tracking the impact of your research, see our guide to scholarly communication.

Research data management

To preserve research data to answer future research questions, the data needs to be managed and made discoverable (with access restrictions if required). Even if one is not required by your funding agency, developing a data management plan (DMP) at the beginning of a new project will ensure usability, preservation and access.

Find out more in our guide to managing your research data.

Publishing support

Open access

The world of scholarly communication and publishing is evolving in many ways. To learn about open access, your rights as an author, trends in scholarly publishing, and to take advantage of different services and initiatives offered by the Library, consult the Scholarly Communication site.

Institutional repository

uO Research, the University's institutional repository, promotes scholarly communication by collecting, preserving and providing free and open access to research created by faculty, researchers and graduate students. Search the repository for theses in our collection or add your research to the collection.

Workshops and seminars

Our librarians will work with you to provide library orientation, assist in creating research assignments and create course Web pages that help students learn to find, evaluate and use information. For detailed information about our instructional programs or to make a request, contact your librarian.

Adding links to Library resources in the new Virtual Campus

In your Virtual Campus course you can create an e-reading list, a list of links to library licensed resources. Linking is not copying or distributing, so copyright clearance is not usually required for linking to an article/chapter/book. Providing students with a direct link is a cost-effective and time-saving method of offering course material.

Brightspace, the Virtual Campus system, has difficulties redirecting URLs that include the proxy prefix necessary to provide off-campus access. It is an issue that the Library and campus partners are looking into, but in the meantime, here are some workarounds to ensure links are functional (PDF, 1.2MB).

The Copyright Office has also prepared a guide on Linking to full-text articles and e-books.

Course Reserve Service

The Course Reserve Service allows instructors to set aside course materials for the short-term use by students. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Library is offering a digital course reserve service (PDFs, ebooks, streaming videos, scanned documents, etc.) Print reserve items are only available for scan on demand (subject to fair dealing guidelines). Alternatively, an item can be requested from another library, should it be available. Ares, the Library’s course reserve platform, provides a single point of access for all course materials; it can be accessed directly and, if the option is activated, through Virtual Campus as well.

Films and videos

Videos engage our attention. The Library has an extensive collection of 45,000 online videos and 10,000 DVDs that supports course-related instruction and informs general cultural literacy. It includes a wide array of foreign films, documentaries, and tutorials. Discover our Films and videos guide.
