Jennifer St. John a débuté sa carrière en enseignant l’anglais langue seconde à l’Université d’Ottawa en tant qu’assistanat d’enseignement au programme intensif d’anglais sans crédit en 1981 et en tant qu’enseignante en 1984. À cette époque, elle enseignait également l’ESL avec le CCDSB, la Banque du Canada et avec le Conseil canadien des arts. En 1988, Jennifer fut embauchée pour un poste permanant au sein de l’Institut des langues secondes (maintenant ILOB) Dans les années 1990, elle concentra ses activités de recherches autour des tests de développement et plus spécifiquement dans l’évaluation des compétences en communication orale. Ses positions occupées inclues : consultante sur le comité consultative d’experts pour le Test d’anglais oral (ETS – Princeton, NJ), directrice intérimaire du projet CanTEST/TESTCan, et développeuse de matériaux et formatrice d’entrevue orale sur le projet des sociétés d’État de Test de langue.

Les activités de recherches actuelles de Jennifer inclus (1) l’exploration d’outils pédagogiques efficaces et des meilleures pratiques pour l’enseignement de la prononciation et des compétences en communication orale et (2) recherches préliminaires sur les besoins et issues des étudiants internationaux inscrits aux programmes d’administration des affaires (avec M. Toews-Janzen).
