At Laval University, I received first training for basic use of rodents (mice) and aseptic surgeries on may 2020 that was approved in december 2020. And then on October 2023 I had an update for the training with new rules and validation of all the basic and aseptic surgery steps.
Training is divided into three parts: theory, practice and validation.
1- theory: everything you need to know about mice, the concept of analgesia, asepsis, anesthesia and ethics.
2- practical: knowing how to give i.p. and s.c. injections to mice, I've also been trained in intra-nasal and retro-orbital injections. I was also trained in aseptic surgery, including putting mice to sleep, skin opening and suturing, with pre- and post-operative procedures.
3- After training in the laboratory's animal facility, someone from ULaval's DSV (Direction des services vétérinaires) comes to check that everything has been done correctly and that the mouse is in good condition.
During my time at Ulaval, I mainly performed the middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAo) model, ip and sc injections, speckle imaging of blood flow (which requires placing the mouse on a stereotaxic device) and transcardiac perfusions.
