(Le français suivra sous peu.) I had the pleasure of being selected to participate in the intensive Summer School International Humanitarian Law class. Initially, I was interested in participating in the course as I wanted to build on my basic knowledge of International law. However, this program provided me with much more. I had the opportunity to learn about IHL from various viewpoints, to read and apply the Conventions and have such an enriching summer experience! One of my favourite moments of the program was Thursday when we completed the full simulation day. This was an amazing opportunity for students to apply the concepts we had learned during the week and receive constructive feedback from professionals. It allowed us to learn outside of the conventional class setting and have a great time doing it. I strongly recommend the course for those that are passionate about learning and building a foundation in International Law and having a great summer experience! Thank you to all those that helped make it a wonderful and organized program.

Je me suis toujours intéressée à l’international. Je suis déléguée à l’ERU (Emergency Response Unit) de la Croix-Rouge Canadienne et j’ai fait une mission en tant qu’anesthésiologiste au Soudan du Sud, une zone de conflit armé, avec le CICR (Comité International de la Croix-Rouge).

On a beaucoup entendu parler des soins de santé en danger ce qui, évidemment, me touche de près. On a aussi beaucoup vu la phrase « même la guerre a ses règles ». N’ayant que très peu de connaissance en droit, j’ai senti le besoin de parfaire mes connaissances sur le sujet. J’avais besoin de comprendre. C’est ce que cette formation en Droit International Humanitaire m’a permis d’acquérir… des connaissances pour mieux comprendre les principes et les règles qui régissent les conflits armés. Ces nouvelles connaissances me permettent aussi de mieux comprendre l’actualité internationale et me seront fort utiles lors de prochaines missions.

Forte de ces nouvelles connaissances, j’ai eu le privilège de partager celles-ci avec des collègues en animant un atelier sur le Droit International Humanitaire lors d’une journée de formation médicale continue. Discuter, échanger, sensibiliser. Ça aussi, ça s’est révélé être un aspect enrichissant résultant de cette formation.
