This Government of Canada initiative helps Canadian universities to attract and retain top-notch postdoctoral research talent, both nationally and internationally. This year’s two recipients, from the Faculty of Medicine (Ottawa Hospital Research Institute) and Faculty of Education, will be awarded $70,000 each annually for two years to continue their research and develop their potential as leaders in their respective fields.
Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS)
The University of Ottawa’s 2019-2020 cohort of recipients of Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships is the largest since 2015. The nine doctoral students come from the Education, Medicine, Science, Social Sciences and Health Sciences faculties.
The Vanier CGS program, created in 2008 by the three federal research granting agencies, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), aims to encourage top-tier doctoral students to develop their academic excellence, research potential and leadership skills and thus contribute to the advancement of the humanities, social sciences, health sciences, natural sciences and engineering.
The Vanier scholarships, which pay $50,000 annually over three years, will allow uOttawa recipients to carry out doctoral research in nanophotonics, human kinetics, and cellular and molecular medicine, as well as in educational psychology, biochemistry, and immigrant integration policies.
“I would like to congratulate the 11 new recipients of these prestigious research scholarships,” said Sylvain Charbonneau, vice-president, research. “This funding will allow these brilliant academics to continue their quest for new knowledge in their respective areas of scientific exploration.”
