I have approved animal protocols for the past 10 years at the Université de Sherbrooke where I was a principal investigator and I served on the Animal Ethics Committee for 2 years.
I primarily work with immunodeficient mice (SCID and Nude) of both sexes. The models of human cancer entail i.p. implantation of human tumor cells or orthotopic implantation in the mammary fat pad. Therapeutic manipulations involve intravenous bolus injection of the experimental pharmaceuticals. The tumor implantation are performed with the mice under anaesthesia. The mice a awake for the intravenous injections. Tumor growth and mouse weight and overall appearance is measured every 3 days. Periodically, the sapehnous vein is nicked and 5-10 uL of blood is collected. The mice are awake for this procedure. Typically, the experiment goes until the tumor reaches the ethical limit volume. Mice are humanely euthanized.
