Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in Research Award

• Candidates must hold a full-time academic position at the University of Ottawa.
• “Early career researcher” category: have obtained a Ph.D. (or the equivalent) no more than 10 years prior to the deadline or have cumulated at most seven years in the first full-time academic position as of the deadline.
  • The eligibility window will be adjusted to take into account delays in research or periods of inactivity due, for instance, to illness and parental leave; eligible leaves will be credited as double the amount of time taken.

A researcher can be nominated in only one OVPRI award category in any year.

Candidates will be evaluated on the basis of their commitment towards EDI in their research activities and their excellence in research, which are understood to encompass the following:

• Championing diversity through leadership and new policies and/or through research 
• Originality of the research
• Impact (or potential for impact) of the research
• Scientific productivity (e.g., publications, reporting new knowledge or data at conferences and other venues, development of new technologies and software, creation of intellectual property, contribution to policy or business decisions, production of community products such as Indigenous scholarly works and cultural sensitivity training, curation of public exhibitions and events, etc.)
• Funding obtained for the research, including from the Tri-Council (taking into consideration the standard in the field)
• Research collaborations and partnerships (or potential for collaborations and partnerships)
• Continued engagement in outreach and knowledge mobilization activities
• Supervision and training of students

Each nomination dossier must include the following:

1. A document prepared by the candidate which describes his or her research contributions related to EDI (English: maximum 3 pages; French: maximum 3 ½ pages).
2. A curriculum vitae listing prizes and distinctions, publications, invited lectures, grants and contracts, present and past students supervised (undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, others), presence in the media or other public arenas, and participation to outreach and knowledge mobilization activities. Please clearly indicate leaves and career interruptions in the CV.
3. Three letters of support (English: maximum 2 pages each; French: maximum 2 ⅓ pages each; on official letterhead and signed). One of the letters must come from a researcher with which the nominee has not had any research affiliation* in the past 6 years, prior to the nomination. The other two letters can come from researchers or organizations in the community with which the nominee has worked before. Please include, on a separate page, a short biography for each referee.

*As understood by the definition of “Conflict of Interest” in the Tri-Agency Policies and Guidelines.

A selection committee chaired by the Associate Vice-President, Research Promotion and Development will evaluate the dossiers.
