About
BHI is an innovative interdisciplinary research initiative focused on expediting efforts to prevent, identify, treat, and provide care for brain-heart illnesses. Our collaboration brings together brain, heart and mental health researchers, people with lived experiences, health care professionals, community organizations, and partners. Notably, BHI’s IDEAS (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Accessibility and Social Justice) strategy in connection with other crosscutting themes, strives to contribute to BHI’s goal to generate a new transdisciplinary model in research excellence. IDEAS focuses on advancing community-centered, inclusive, equitable, and impactful brain-heart research that benefits all.
Event program description
Who? This 1-day workshop will bring together researchers, students, experts in Indigenous, Open Science and Rights-Based perspectives, community groups and people with lived experiences interested in and engaged in fair and equitable data governance in brain-heart research that benefits all.
What? Brain-heart conditions are studied separately despite common causes and risks. Equity-deserving groups (EDGs) and Indigenous Peoples remain excluded from research yet are among the most vulnerable. The goal of the workshop is to discuss, learn and identify opportunities and challenges to Indigenous populations and EDGs to have voice, ownership and control over identity-based health data in brain-heart research. The issues will be explored in the spirit of developing respectful, trusting, inclusive and safe relationships in data production and use. See Program Overview.
