Dr. Michael T. Richard (M.D., FAANS, FRCS (C), Neurosurgeon) continued his legacy as a leader in neurosurgery beyond his years in practice.
Made possible by his generosity, the Michael T. Richard Fellowship in Neurosurgery has supported many promising clinical fellows and residents in the Clinician Investigator Program pursuing a graduate degree. The awarded trainees pursue important research in the field of Neurosurgery or Neurovascular Intervention at the uOBMRI. Dr. Richard passed away peacefully on June 13, 2023, in his 88th year of life. He is an enduring inspiration for young Clinician-Investigators in Ottawa and beyond.
“I received the Michael T. Richard fellowship during my research year in PGY4 of neurosurgery residency. It provided funding for my research project on using artificial intelligence to predict cerebral vasospasm after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage. This research project was also my Master's thesis in biomedical engineering. Thanks to this fellowship, I was able to successfully defend my thesis, receive my master's diploma, present my work at two international conferences and one national conference, and am now working on finalizing my project results for publication.”
