Dr. Cristiano de Souza Therrien was a Scotiabank Postdoctoral Fellow in AI and Regulation at the University of Ottawa AI + Society Initiative.

Dr. Therrien holds a doctorate in law (LL.D.) from Université de Montréal. His many research interests include the application of data analytics to legal research, governance of Big Data projects in the public sector, and ethical and intellectual property issues in artificial intelligence.

Under the guidance of Prof. Pierre Trudel, Dr. Therrien’s doctoral research explored the legal imaginary of smart cities through a combination of text mining, policy analysis, and science fiction. During the doctorate at Université de Montréal, Dr. Therrien collaborated extensively in the Centre de recherche en droit public (CRDP) activities and the L. R. Wilson Chair in Information Technology and E-Commerce Law.

Dr. Therrien worked for 12 years as a lawyer, legal consultant for tech companies and public institutions, and a law professor in Brazil. His educational background includes a master's degree in informatics and law at Universidad Complutense de Madrid (Spain) and a bachelor's degree in law at Universidade Federal do Ceará (Brazil).
