Muriam Fancy was the Research Coordinator of the University of Ottawa AI + Society Initiative, hosted at the Centre for Law, Technology and Society.

As Research Coordinator, Muriam Fancy will assist Dr. Florian Martin-Bariteau in developing the AI + Society Initiative to promote research, inclusion, and highlighting injustices in AI. She will coordinate the management, evaluation, and knowledge mobilization for the Initiative’s research projects; as well as related projects at the Centre and the University Research Chair in Technology and Society.

Muriam Fancy is specializing in policy research focusing on the intersections of human rights, governance, and artificial intelligence from an international human rights perspective. She is passionate about understanding the ethical perspectives and frameworks for emerging technologies and the impact on marginalized communities.

Her interests lead her to become a research fellow at the Montreal AI Ethics Institute as an AI ethics researcher. She is also the Deputy Lead of Operations & Strategy at the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network Youth; and a Youth Advisor to the Canadian Commission for UNESCO. She has previously worked as a Knowledge Mobilizer at the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR) as part of their Quantum Information Systems program.

Muriam Fancy is currently completing her Masters in Global Affairs at the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy, with a specialization in innovation. She previously completed her undergraduate degree in Peace, Conflict, and Justice Studies with a double minor in Indigenous Studies and Diaspora & Transnational Studies from the University of Toronto.
