CIPPIC – Samuelson-Glushko Canadian Internet Policy and Public Interest Clinic

The Samuelson-Glushko Canadian Internet Policy and Public Interest Clinic (CIPPIC) is Canada’s first and only public interest technology law clinic.

Based at the University of Ottawa’s Centre for Law, Technology and Society and Faculty of Law, CIPPIC's team of legal experts and law students work together to advance the public interest on critical law and technology issues.

Established in 2003, CIPPIC is one of five technology law clinics across North America to benefit from the generous financial support of Prof. Pam Samuelson and Dr. Robert Glushko. The Clinic’s team of experts works together to advance the public interest on critical law and technology issues including privacy; free expression; intellectual property; telecommunications policy; and data and algorithmic governance.

CIPPIC's mandate has three interrelated components:

  • CIPPIC speaks up for the public interest when key decisions about technology law and policy are being made by Parliament, the courts, regulatory agencies, international bodies, and private companies;
  • CIPPIC provides pro bono legal counsel to clients with technology law matters that implicate the public interest; and
  • CIPPIC develops public education materials and resources on technology law and policy issues.
