Sarah Marquis was a PhD candidate in Environmental Sustainability at the Institute of the Environment and the University of Ottawa Centre for Law, Technology and Society, under the supervision of Dr. Kelly Bronson.
Sarah Marquis began her PhD at the Institute of the Environment at the University of Ottawa in 2020. Her work focuses on the impacts of ‘digital farming’ or ‘smart farming’ and how the emergence of agricultural big data is helping to reshape the politics and practices of farming. Her PhD research will continue to explore the social and environmental impacts of ag-tech in Canada, and she is particularly interested in the role of artificial intelligence in agriculture. She is committed to the application of a critical lens to technologies that are framed as solutions to environmental problems like climate change.
Sarah Marquis works as a research assistant for Senator Mary Coyle, an independent senator representing Nova Scotia. She contributes to Senator Coyle’s work to focus Canadian parliamentarians on the challenges of climate change and biodiversity loss. Sarah Marquis is also involved in an Ottawa-based organization called Climate Justice Ottawa, an advocacy group committed to the environmental justice movement.
Sarah Marquis received a MA degree from the University of Guelph Department of Geography, Environment and Geomatics in 2020. She previously completed her undergraduate degree in Environmental Science at Queen’s University.
