Yuan Stevens was a Research Fellow with the University Research Chair in Technology and Society.
In 2021-2022, she was an Articling Candidate for the Law Society of Ontario at the Samuelson-Glushko Canadian Internet Policy & Public Interest Clinic (CIPPIC).
Currently completing her LL.M. with a concentration in law and technology at the University of Ottawa Faculty of Law under the supervision of Dr. Florian Martin-Bariteau, Yuan Stevens’s (“You-anne”) work focuses on information security and data protection rights, with an emphasis on public interest hacking, artificial intelligence, and media ecosystems. She works towards a world where powerful actors—and the systems they build—are held accountable to the public, especially when it comes to vulnerable or marginalized people.
She is also a research affiliate at Data & Society Research Institute, and a collaborator at McGill Centre for Media, Technology and Democracy. She previously worked at Harvard University's Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society during her studies in law at McGill University.
When she’s not examining the role of technology in creating dystopian futures in Canada and abroad, you can find her gardening on her balcony, taking apart hardware around her house or keeping up with (elderly) family members in Newfoundland.
