Data Literacy Research Institute

The Data Literacy Research Institute (DLRI) is an interdisciplinary hub that combines research and teaching, bringing together scholars from across faculties to study and promote data literacy.

About the Institute

data literacy (da·ta lit·er·a·cy) "the ability to read, understand, create, and communicate data as information"

The University of Ottawa Data Literacy Research Institute is an interdisciplinary and bilingual hub, which brings together experts to conduct cutting-edge research and training on the current and future challenges that arise from inadequate data literacy. Insufficient data literacy skills:

  • threaten data quality, data preservation, and data interpretation,
  • undermine the democratic process through the spread of misinformation and misinterpretation,
  • promote ineffective communication, and,
  • lead to missed opportunities through increased inefficiencies.

The adverse effects of weak data literacy are only starting to be understood and the need for data literacy is expected to increase as the amount and type of data becomes more complex in all aspects of our lives.

The goal of the Institute is to address problems related to insufficient data literacy, and to create an interdisciplinary environment that promotes improved data literacy for learners, educators, policymakers, and citizens, providing them with the tools and confidence they need to successfully interpret, interact, and share data in their careers and everyday lives.
