Biography

Hang Chi

Dr. Hang Chi is an Assistant Professor of Physics and EECS at the University of Ottawa. He obtained his B.S. in Physics in 2009 from Peking University, China, and Ph.D. in Physics in 2014 from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, working on advanced thermoelectrics.

After postdoc training at Brookhaven National Laboratory in 2015-2017, he moved to the Francis Bitter Magnet Laboratory at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2018, holding a U.S. Army Research Laboratory Fellowship. He was promoted to the rank of Research Scientist in 2022, investigating magnetically proximitized topological and superconducting interfaces. In July 2023, Dr. Chi joined uOttawa to lead the development of Quantum Electronic Devices and Circuits.

Dr. Chi is interested in emergent phenomena in magnetic quantum materials and interfaces. His group pursues (i) exchange proximitized topological interfaces for next-generation magnetic memory/logic devices with superior performance, as well as (ii) magnetic superconducting heterostructures for non-reciprocal quantum circuits towards practical quantum information processing and computing. To address these challenging yet highly rewarding tasks pertaining to extraordinary surfaces and interfaces, the Chi group synergistically combines ab initio simulations; crystal growth, thin film/heterostructure deposition and micro/nanodevice fabrication; structural, magnetic, magneto-thermo-electrical quantum transport, as well as advanced neutron, muon, scanning tunneling probes at major user facilities worldwide.
