Our Centre and the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) have concluded an MOU to establish a regulatory framework to provide technical assistance and contribute to the development of the Inter-American Human Rights System (IAHRS) through the strengthening of the capacities of the rapporteurships, special rapporteurships and sections of the Commission.

The agreement also seeks to promote the use of the IAHRS and its norms and standards through the implementation of an Academic Network. The Academic Network is to contribute with studies, research and other activities, to deepen knowledge and generate information that contributes to the promotion and defense of human rights in the region.  In addition, the Academic Network seeks to generate channels for regular dialogue with civil society and academia, as well as the formalization of alliances of the Commission with academic research centres engaged with the IAHRS.

The contributions from HRREC will focus on establishing guidelines pertaining to academic freedom in the Americas and enabling their implementation within the IAHRS. The work will be conducted in the context of the Human Rights Clinic “Scholars at Risk in the Americas” Project in partnership with the University of Monterrey (Mexico) and the Scholars at Risk Network.

The IACHR is a principal and autonomous organ of the Organization of American States (OAS), responsible for the promotion and protection of human rights in the Americas and, together with the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, is an institution of the IAHRS.
