Biography
Dr. Levitt held the Fulbright Visiting Research Chair in Human Rights and Social Justice at the Human Rights Research and Education Center (HRREC) in 2012. He was a distinguished professor of international law in Florida A&M University, associate dean for international programs, founding director of the Center for International Law and Justice and special assistant to the provost. He formerly served as a professor of law at Florida International University and DePaul University. Dr. Levitt Professor Levitt served as Head of the International Technical Advisory Committee (ITAC) of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of the Republic of Liberia (TRC), and has extensive experience working with international organizations such as the World Bank Group and United Nations, ad hoc criminal tribunals including the Special Court for Sierra Leone, and transnational NGO’s like The Carter Center. He is a member of the American Law Institute and Executive Council of the American Society of International Law.
Dr. Levitt holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge, a JD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a BA from Arizona State University. He is recognized as one of the world’s foremost authorities in the area of the law of the use of force, international human rights law, humanitarian law, peace studies and African politics. He published the widely acclaimed book: ILLEGAL PEACE IN AFRICA: An Inquiry into the Legality of Power-sharing with African Warlords, Rebels and Junta (Cambridge University Press, 2012).
