Q. Is COVID vaccination a requirement to attend this course?
A. Yes. The university of Ottawa requires that anyone who intends on coming to campus for any reason must be fully vaccinated. Members of the uOttawa community – students, faculty, and staff – certify their vaccination status using the COVID-19 Vaccination Declaration online tool. isitors to uOttawa are also required to certify their vaccination status, using the COVID-19 Vaccination Declaration online tool.
Individuals who are considered fully vaccinated and who have completed a COVID-19 Vaccination Declaration will not need to undergo testing. However, visitors will need to complete the COVID-19 Daily Health Check-In form online before coming to campus and must receive confirmation they are permitted to come onto campus.

Q. How is the selection process conducted?
A. The program will admit 30 English participants and 30 French participants (maximum). The course seeks to achieve a balance between the number of students and practitioners working in the field of international humanitarian law. While looking at your CV and motivation letter, we will be assessing your interest in International Humanitarian Law, notably by identifying relevant work experience, studies and extracurricular activities related to the subject.
Q. Am I able to take this course for credits?
A. Yes. Students at the undergraduate level, including law students, can take this course for accreditation purposes. If you choose to do so, please indicate it on the application form. If you have not asked to take the course for credit at the time of application, if accepted, you will not be able to ask for credits afterwards.
Q. If I did not study Law, nor have any concrete experience in International Humanitarian Law, does this cause any problem?
A. The course is open to anyone wishing to expand their knowledge in International Humanitarian Law. To be considered for the course, it is imperative to demonstrate true interest and motivation in the subject. However, students who take the course for credit must be at least: 2nd year law, 1st year in the graduate and postdoctoral studies, and/or have previously taken international law course(s).
Q. How is the course organized in terms of language?
A. The course is offered in both French and English, with some sessions offered bilingually. Applicants must choose the language in which they would like to follow the course and indicate it on their application form. International applicants will be required to submit a proof of language proficiency such as the TOEFL or the TEF. Once an applicant is enrolled in a section (French or English), he/she will not be permitted to switch sections. If taking the course for credit, papers may be submitted in either language.
Q. When will I be advised if I have been admitted?
A. The admissions committee will consider the bulk of applications immediately after the April 15 deadline (or earlier if possible). Students applying for credits will receive a decision during the week of April 18 at the latest. Students who are not applying for credits and professionals will receive a decision by the week of May 11. International applications will be treated earlier, if possible, to facilitate visa requests.
Q. What is the Cancellation Policy?
A. For-credit students can cancel their registration and will be subject to University of Ottawa policies. Registered non-credit students and professionals will be charged a $100 CAD administrative fee for cancellations. If you inform us of your inability to participate before May 20, 2022, the remainder of the fees will be reimbursed. Otherwise, no reimbursement will be provided.
Q. What is the evaluation method for this course?
A. If you decide to take this course for accreditation purposes, you will be asked to write an 8,000 words exam (minimum 2,000 words per question) answering specific questions revealed at the end of the course. You will have one month from the end date of the course to complete the paper. The evaluation will be done based on the content, organization and coherence of your paper.
Q. For students taking the course for credit, when is the final paper due?

Q. If I am not a Canadian citizen, am I eligible to attend this course?
A. Yes, but please be aware that the process to receive your visa can be lengthy and the course administrators are not able to assist in the procurement of travel documents (i.e. visas). Language proficiency in the language chosen for the course must be demonstrated at the moment of the application.
