A word from the Director

Thank you for visiting the website of the Interdisciplinary Centre for Black Health (ICBH). Launched in October 2021, the ICBH is the result of a broad consultation between researchers from different fields that I had the onerous task and, above all, the pleasure of leading. This broad consultation involved researchers from various faculties (civil law, common law, medicine, health sciences, social sciences, education), as well as research institutes from hospitals affiliated with the University of Ottawa, including the Royal Mental Health Centre, the Heart Institute and Montfort Hospital. The Centre responds to the health disparities observed among people from Black communities, to gaps in the training of health professionals and in research, as well as in the care and public health policies concerning them. The Centre is intended to be an interdisciplinary space of excellence, guiding the efforts of federal, provincial, territorial and municipal agencies to understand, reduce and eliminate racial health disparities. Its mission is to promote health equity for Black communities through rigorous, interdisciplinary, innovative research and community and social engagement.

The centre brings together researchers with varied expertise in medicine, nursing, nutrition, psychology, sociology, economics, law, public health and epidemiology, from an interdisciplinary and social justice perspective. The centre is also a privileged space for training graduate students in various fields, transferring knowledge and consulting for healthcare institutions and government, provincial and municipal public health agencies on health issues in Black communities in Canada. Our 5 out of 5 strategy articulates our five-research axe around 5 strategic priorities aimed at eliminating racial disparities in health. The ICBH works directly with Black communities, who also participate in the management of the centre. The permanent bridge established with organizations and community leaders ensures that our research, programs, strategies and tools are continually based on people's real needs.

The ICBH also needs you. Your contribution can take many forms, including donations for specific or centre-identified research, student scholarships, etc. To donate to the centre, please click on the Donate button above. As Neslon Mandela once said: "It seems impossible, until it is done". Achieving health equity for black communities is an achievable goal, and we're putting all our energy into it.
