Chair of Board

Linda Keen is a corporate director of several boards including the Ottawa Heart Institute and a past board member of the Canadian Light Source. She is a member of the Mirror Committee of the ISO Governance Group. Her background includes science and laboratory executive roles including the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, the Metals and Minerals Sector of Natural Resources Canada and in Agriculture Canada. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and a Master of Science (interdisciplinary) in Agriculture from the University of Alberta plus a designation as a Certified Corporate Director, C. Dir., designation from the DeGroote School of Management at McMaster University. She was appointed to the board in March 2021 and as chair in April,2022.

Sandy is the Chief Finance Officer of Ocean Networks Canada in Victoria. She is responsible for ONC’s finances, including financial administration, budget planning, audits, and financial statements, as well as supervision of the finance team.  She is involved in developing and ensuring the long-term financial health of ONC, including financial risk and leadership of financial strategy.  Sandy worked in accounting positions in the private sector before joining the University of Victoria in 1995, first as the Director of Research Accounting and then as Director of Accounting Services, before moving to ONC in 2019.  Sandy possesses a Chartered Professional Accounting designation and has a BA (honours with distinction) and an MA in Art History from the University of a Victoria.

Mark Boland is a Professor, Department of Physics and Engineering Physics, at the University of Saskatchewan and Machine Director at the Canadian Light Source in Saskatoon since 2017. As a member of the CLS executive team, he is responsible for the ongoing Synchrotron machine operations. Previously, he was a Principal Accelerator Physicist at the Australian Synchrotron, Melbourne, Australia, a STINT Post doctoral Fellow, Lund University, Sweden, and a Fulbright Research Fellow at Stanford University. He possesses a B.Sc.(honours) and a Ph.D., from the University of Melbourne, Australia.

Christine Hatté is a Research Director at the Laboratoire des Sciences du Climat et de l'Environnement (LSCE), at la Commission pour l’Énergie Atomique (CEA) in Saclay, France. Since 2021, she is also an Associate Professor at the Silesian University of Technology in the Department of Physics, Gliwice, Poland. She obtained her Ph.D. in geology from l’Université de Paris-Sud 11 and a research management diploma from l’Université de Versailles Saint Quentin.

Jack is an Emeritus Professor in the Anthropology Department at the University of Alberta. His research interests lie in Plains, Subarctic, Great Basin and Northeast Asian prehistory, archaeological theory, Paleoindian studies and Public Archaeology. He previously served with the Archaeological Survey of Alberta, Royal Alberta Museum and the Historic Resource Management Branch, serving as Alberta’s Provincial Archaeologist. He possesses a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Saskatchewan, Master of Arts from the University of Alberta, and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan.

Guy Levesque has spent the last 25 years working in the area of research support and innovation, through successive roles at the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the University of Manitoba, the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) and the University of Ottawa. 

In November 2018, Guy joined the University of Ottawa as Associate Vice-President, Research Support and Infrastructure. He oversaw a portfolio that includes the Office of Strategic Development Initiatives, Innovation Support Services, the uOttawa-Kanata North initiative, the Office of Research Ethics and Integrity, Animal Care and Veterinary Services, Animal Ethics, and Institutional Core Facilities. 

In December 2021, Guy became uOttawa’s inaugural Associate Vice-President, Innovation, Partnerships and Entrepreneurship to focus all of his efforts on 1) strengthening the University’s leadership position within the local and national innovation ecosystems, 2) enhancing and expanding the University’s innovation activities, internally and externally, 3) foster collaborations with a range of partners from across all sectors and disciplines, and 4) promoting the University’s innovation plans and successes, locally, nationally and internationally.

Laurie Swami is the President and CEO of the Nuclear Waste Management Organization. She is responsible for implementing Canada’s plan for the long-term management of used nuclear fuel. Ms. Swami previously served as Senior Vice-President of Decommissioning and Nuclear Waste Management at Ontario Power Generation (OPG). She began her career at OPG in 1986 and held various roles with increasing responsibility in the Nuclear Division. She holds a B.Sc. In Engineering Chemistry from Queen’s University and an MBA from the Schulich School of Business.

Timothy Jull is a senior research scientist with the Department of Geosciences at the University of Arizona. He also is director of the UA's Accelerator Mass Spectrometer Laboratory, addressing a variety of problems in geochemistry, geophysics, and archaeology. He obtained a Bachelor`s degree in chemistry at the University of British Columbia and in geochemistry at the University of Bristol. He did postdoctoral studies at Bristol, the University of Cambridge, and the Max-Planck-Institut für Chemie in Mainz, Germany.

Len Wassenaar is a Guest Professor at the Wassercluster in Lunz GmbH, in Austria (Danube University). He worked for many years as a research scientist for Environment Canada in Saskatoon and became Director of Stable Isotope Hydrology and Ecology Research Laboratory at Environment Canada. In 2012, he joined the UN-International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna as Team Leader for Isotope Hydrology Laboratory. From 2019-2021 he served as Head of Water Resources Section and Laboratory. Len Wassenaar is also an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Geology at the University of Saskatchewan. He holds a Ph.D. in Geochemistry and Isotope Hydrology from the University of Waterloo and was a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Institüt für Hydrologie, in Munich, Germany.

Elena Chamizo is a Research Scientist supporting Research and Teaching at the Centro Nacional de Aceleradores (CNA, Seville, Spain).  She received her Ph.D. in Sciences at the University of Seville in 2009. In 2005, the first multi-elemental 1 MV AMS system designed and manufactured by HVEE, was installed at the CNA. Since then, she has worked full-time at this facility, consolidating a research line on the analysis of actinides radionuclides (_²³³U, _²³⁶U, _²³⁷Np, _²³⁹Pu, _²⁴⁰Pu, _²⁴¹Pu), including the development of radiochemical methods, and AMS analysis in applied fields.

Keith Fifield holds a Professor Emeritus position in the Department of Nuclear Physics, at the Australian National University. He received his PhD in Nuclear Physics from University of Pennsylvania in 1973 and has held research positions in nuclear physics laboratories at the universities of Pennsylvania, Oxford, and ANU. In 1986, he began to develop the new technique of accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) at the ANU’s 14UD Heavy-Ion Accelerator Facility. This became a full-time occupation from 1991. Since then, Keith has been at the forefront of innovation in both the methods and application of the technique and is advisor to AMS labs in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, India, Italy, USA, and Australia.

Oliver Warr is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Ottawa.  He obtained his PhD at the University of Manchester in 2013 where he studied the effect of supercritical carbon dioxide on noble gas partitioning for application within both natural and man-made systems. During his first and second post-docs at the University of Oxford and the University of Toronto, he investigated the intersection of noble gas geochronology and stable isotope geochemistry and how they can be applied to investigate bio-geochemical and physical properties associated with a diverse range of natural systems including those which serve as analogues for long-term nuclear waste repositories. His published and future research focuses on hydrogeology, groundwater contamination and fluid migration, anthropogenic waste disposal sites, biogeochemical and environmental habitability and (paleo)environmental reconstruction, and the formation and evolution of (un)conventional hydrocarbon, hydrogen, and helium resources.
