Located in the Advanced Research Complex (ARC), the noble gas lab prepares and analyses samples for analysis by IRMS. Noble gases are the elements that make up Group 18 of the periodic table. Under standard conditions, they are odorless, colorless, monatomic gases with very low chemical reactivity. The six naturally occurring noble gases are helium (He), neon (Ne), argon (Ar), krypton (Kr), xenon (Xe), and the radioactive radon (Rn). Their inert nature allows them to serve as excellent tracers in complex hydrological systems. Each of the non-radioactive noble gases has a series of stable isotopes, which can be measured for their information on hydrogeological processes and conditions.
