The AI + Society Initiative, the Centre for Health Law, Ethics and Policy, and the Centre for Law, Technology and Society are delighted to announce that Alex Trebek Postdoctoral Fellow Dr. Michael Da Silva has been appointed as a Permanent Lecturer (Assistant Professor) at the University of Southampton School of Law, as of April 1, 2022.
Dr. Michael Da Silva joined the University of Ottawa in November 2020 as the Alex Trebek Postdoctoral Fellow in AI and Health Care, working on the regulation of AI-enabled medical devices. He later added responsibilities helping to coordinate the Canadian Institutes of Health Research-funded Machine M.D. research project on health-related AI co-led by Colleen M. Flood, Anna Goldenberg, Catherine Régis, and Teresa Scassa.
In this capacity, Dr. Da Silva has co-authored forthcoming work in the University of British Columbia Law Review, Healthcare Policy, and Systematic Reviews. Among other accomplishments, Dr. Da Silva has also helped coordinate a scoping review on legal issues related to health-related AI, organized case study workshops on health-related AI tools co-hosted by the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (and drafted reports available here and here) and taught an intensive course on the Law and Ethics of Health-Related AI. During his time at the University of Ottawa, Dr. Da Silva served on Health Canada’s External Reference Group on Development of regulatory requirements for Adaptive Machine Learning-enabled Medical Devices
Dr. Da Silva has also published extensively on non-AI-related issues, including social rights, authority, federalism, and nationalism. These include publication in law (e.g., Osgoode Hall Law Journal, the Michigan Journal of International Law), philosophy (e.g., Philosophy Compass, the Journal of Value Inquiry), and bioethics (e.g., Public Health Ethics) journals. He has also co-edited an issue of Bioethics and recently published his first book, The Pluralist Right to Health Care: A Framework and Case Study (Toronto: University of Toronto Press, 2022).
Dr. Da Silva received his doctorate from the University of Toronto Faculty of Law, previously completed a CIHR Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship in the McGill University Faculty of Law and Institute for Health and Social Policy and is a member of the New York bar.
