He joins Green Party of Canada Leader Elizabeth May, pre-eminent constitutional expert Peter Hogg, former Supreme Court of Canada Justice John Major, and former Premier of Quebec Lucien Bouchard.
Described as “probably the most influential voice on law and technology in Canada not only within the legal profession but also by educating the general public” he is lauded for his Toronto Star and Ottawa Citizen columns, his highly regarded blog, and his service on a number of boards including the CANARIE Board of Directors, the Canadian Legal Information Institute Board of Directors, the Privacy Commissioner of Canada’s Expert Advisory Board, the Electronic Frontier Foundation Advisory Board, and the Information Program Sub-Board of the Open Society Institute.
The process of identifying this year’s winners involved soliciting input from a variety of legal groups and associations, some winners from last year’s Top 25, the magazine’s general readership, as well as an internal panel of writers and editors.
As stated by voters “he is the most publicly active person in the area of technology and copyright law and policy in Canada. Everyone practising in this area reads what he has written, and he has made it accessible for the public and for the technology obsessed as well.”
