He is hailed for his success in using communication tools – most notably, his blog and twitter – to make business leaders and policy makers “miss the days that they could get on with the job of deciding policy and negotiating deals far from the spotlight of unwelcome scrutiny from activists.”
Professor Geist’s close watch of, and writings about, the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) negotiations have played a key role in bringing some transparency to an otherwise secret negotiation process. His work on copyright reform is no less critical: “his contributions to the copyright debate are erudite and well informed and consumers and copyright activists have few better advocates.”
Other recipients include United States Vice-President Joe Biden, Canadian Industry Minister Tony Clement, United States Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy, and European Patent Office President Benoît Battistelli.
