The Centre for Law, Technology and Society is delighted to announce that Faculty member Teresa Scassahas been appointed by the Council of Canadian Academies as Chair of theExpert Panel on AI for Science and Engineering that will examine a broad range of factors related to the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in scientific research and discovery in Canada. FellowB. Courtney Doagoo was also appointed as an Expert Panel member.
The use of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning in science and engineering has the potential to radically transform the nature of scientific inquiry and discovery and produce a wide range of social and economic benefits for Canadians. However, the adoption of these technologies also presents a number of potential challenges and risks.
The National Research Council of Canada (NRC) asked the Council of Canadian Academies (CCA) to examine the legal/regulatory, ethical, policy and social challenges associated with deploying AI technologies to enable scientific/engineering research design and discovery in Canada. To this end, the CCA assembled a multidisciplinary group with extensive expertise in law, policy, ethics, philosophy, sociology, and AI technology
The new CCA Expert Panel on AI for Science and Engineering will be chaired by Dr.Teresa Scassa, the Canada Research Chair in Information Law and Policy, a Faculty member at the Centre for Law, Technology and Society, and a Full Professor in the Faculty of Law, Common Law Section at the University of Ottawa. The Expert Panel will also include Dr. B. Courtney Doagoo, a Fellow at the AI + Society Initiative and the Centre for Law, Technology and Society at the University of Ottawa.
