The HRREC is pleased to welcome Professor Ann Marie Clark who will serve as Fulbright Canada Research Chair in Human Rights and Social Justice this Fall 2021.

Ann Marie Clark is a political science professor at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, USA. Her latest book Demands of Justice: The Creation of a Global Human Rights Practice, to be published with Cambridge University Press in February 2022. The book traces how human rights advocacy has created a set of practical tools for building global justice.

Her Fulbright project, Human Rights Defenders: Bringing Local Social Justice under the Global Human Rights Umbrella, will focus on global and local protection of human rights defenders, including defenders of environmental rights and indigenous rights.

Professor Clark is especially interested in the political and theoretical significance of human rights defenders as a protected identity in international human rights law.She will be exploring the extent to which such recognition extends global protection to local actors who work on social justice issues that may not fit a traditional conception of human rights. While in Ottawa, she is looking forward to connecting with uOttawa scholars from a variety of disciplines.
