Shortly after the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) launched a special call of its Alliance Grants program, the NSERC Alliance COVID-19 grants, to stimulate collaborations between academic researchers and the public and not-for-profit sectors, and industry, to address pandemic-related research and technical challenges.

Since the initial launch of the New Frontiers in Research Fund – Exploration Stream program in 2018, researchers in the Faculty of Science have seen considerable success in this extremely competitive grant competition. Proposing innovative, interdisciplinary and high-risk/high-reward projects, two of our faculty members led applications that were successful in the Fall 2020 competition.

Laboratory-based research is crucial to better understand our environment, develop therapies for disease and improve our overall quality of life. However, experimental research is very cost-intensive when we consider the price of state-of-the art research equipment.
