Overview

Status: Open

The Office of the Vice-President, Research and Innovation (OVPRI) is inviting internal applications from university professors, submitted through the 6 Affiliated Institutes, in all of the University’s Strategic Areas of Research. This call for nomination is supported by the Ottawa Academic Health Network (OAHN) which aims to foster collaboration between uOttawa and the 6 hospital-based affiliated institutes.

The general purpose of the uOttawa URC program is to:

  • recognize researchers with outstanding and sustained accomplishments in research, or those who demonstrate initial, significant achievements with exceptional future promise, while maintaining a solid teaching record; and
  • provide financial support for the Chairholder’s research program, which is in addition to the researcher’s concurrent sources of external funding.

For this URC-OAHN Call for Nominations, the purpose is to enhance partnership between uOttawa and all 6 affiliated research institutes and support the delivery of the OAHN’s research goals which include: a) increasing research and innovation capacity; b) enhancing the quality of research; c) improving the research and learning environment; d) augmenting research impact; e) enhancing the parties’ profile; and f) ultimately improving the quality of care to patients.

The priority foci of this uOttawa and affiliated institutes URC-OAHN Call for Nominations includes:

  1. The support of research clearly linked to the University’s Strategic Areas of Research and the corresponding affiliated-institute’s research strategic plan.
  2. Areas of particular interest include:
    1. Interdisciplinary research that traverses more than one of the three federal granting agencies mandate;
    2. Research aligned to priority uOttawa research programs including (but not limited to) the Brain-Heart Interconnectome;
    3. Research incorporating robust knowledge mobilization framework with impact for patients, caregivers, community members and public policy.
  3. Research incorporating a culture of inclusion, diversity, equity and excellence within the uOttawa research environment as outlined in the EDI Action Plan for Research.

Up to six (6) University Research Chairs (URC-OAHN) are available in this competition (35,000$ per year for 5 years – includes uOttawa and affiliated institute contribution). The number of Chairs available may be modified, subject to the availability of funds. There is a maximum of 1 Chair awarded per affiliated institute.

Applications from individuals identifying in one or more of the four designated groups (racialized individuals, Indigenous Peoples, persons with disabilities, and women and gender equity-seeking groups) are strongly encouraged. Applications can be written in either French or English.

Affiliated Institutes' Research Offices are required to launch an open call and conduct a transparent selection process.

After the selection process, each Institute may submit up to two applications to the Office of the Vice-President, Research and Innovation (OVPRI). These applications will be evaluated by the URC-OAHN Selection Committee. To promote interdisciplinary research and encourage collaborations between faculty and affiliated institutes, each candidate submitted by an Institute must represent and be appointed to a different faculty. Institutes are also encouraged to select a diverse range of applicants, including members of underrepresented groups.

Following adjudication by the OVPRI URC-OAHN Selection Committee (committee will include expertise related to NSERC, SSHRC, and CIHR mandates), final approval of the appointments of the Chairs is made by the University of Ottawa’s Research Chairs Evaluation Committee (RCEC).
