Internships, field placements & practicums

We offer many practical internships and field placements linked to courses to reinforce what you’ve learned in class and help you gain experience in a variety of work environments. We also offer practicums designed to give future teachers, nurses, dietitians and food scientists the practical experience they need to get ready for the workplace. You can get course units credited and valuable experience with these options!

Community engagement

Help others while you gain valuable work experience helping yourself through socially responsible community engagement. Express your drive to change the world by putting what you learn in the classroom to good use as a volunteer. We offer a range of volunteer opportunities in Ottawa and around the world. You can even replace some course assignments with professor-approved volunteer placements.

Get a taste for research

Get a taste for research at one of the top 10 research-intensive universities in Canada! No matter which faculty you’re in, the Centre for Research Opportunities will help you gain research experience as early as your first year at uOttawa. Every year more than 250 undergraduate students receive a $1,000 scholarship to devote 75 hours to a research project. You could also receive up to $6,000 to do research placements in Canada or around the world.

Work on campus

Step out of the classroom and be right at work: how’s that for an easy commute! Help pay for your education with a part-time job on campus that fits your course schedule. With the work-study program, you can earn up to $7,000 over the summer and up to $4,000 working part time during the school year. Add valuable uOttawa job experience to your resumé as you work 10-to-12 hours a week.

Graduate Studies

Your uOttawa learning experience doesn’t have to end when you graduate. You can specialize further and pursue a master’s. It’s an excellent way to improve your long-term earning potential and stand above the crowd in the job market. The University of Ottawa recently introduced new short-duration master’s programs that can be completed in 12 months! In all, we offer more than 200 master’s, doctorates and graduate diplomas.

Designed with international students’ needs in mind, our second language intensive programs offer custom-made courses for you to upgrade your English or French before starting your studies at the University of Ottawa. With an added Canadian culture component, our second language intensive programs put the odds of success at uOttawa in your favour!

Parliamentary page program

See Canadian politics up close by working as a page in the House of Commons or Senate. Every year, the program accepts the best and brightest students from across Canada. You can earn over $18,000 by participating in the program. Our campus is a short 1 km walk from Parliament Hill, which means you’ll be able to get there quickly after class!
