All elements of this test are completed in the Language Testing Services Office by appointment, during regular office hours, through the Xpresslab online language testing portal. If desired, the test may be completed over the course of two or more days.
Listening comprehension test
This test lasts about 45-60 minutes and has three parts:
- Part 1 consists of 3-5 telephone messages with short answer questions about key information in the messages.
- Part 2 consists of a short speech with short answer and multiple-choice questions about key information.
- Part 3 consists of a bilingual departmental meeting with short answer questions about key information and vocabulary. You are graded not on the quality of your writing, but on your comprehension. Therefore, you can respond in English, French, or a mix of the two languages.
Reading comprehension test
This test lasts about 70 minutes and contains three authentic passages related to academic and university life.
- Passage 1 is about 800-1,000 words long and includes multiple-choice questions, true or false questions, short answer questions, and vocabulary questions. As with the Listening Comprehension Test, for the short answer questions you are graded not on the quality of your writing but on your comprehension only.
- Passage 2 is about 500-600 words with 8-10 multiple-choice questions.
- Passage 3, a cloze test, has 20-30 blanks which require candidates to select the correct words to complete the text.
Writing test
- You will write a text of around 300-400 words on a general academic topic related to university life.
- You have 30 minutes to write your text and will not have access to translation software or other online resources.
Speaking test
You will record responses to two oral production tasks. These tasks last approximately 15 minutes.
- Task 1 is an uncorrected warm-up task. You will tell us about yourself (e.g. your first name, place of birth, occupation, university studies, interests in everyday life, etc.).
- In Task 2, you will be provided with a scenario related to common work tasks, such as the organization of scientific or administrative events. You will be given a short time to prepare before recording your response.
