MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN

INSPIRED BY THE SAME PASSION
At the Faculty of Science, our strength lies in our people, namely our students, support staff and professors, people who are inspired by a common passion for discovery and who work together in a collegial atmosphere.

OUR PROGRAMS
Year after year, the Faculty recruits an unparalleled number of outstanding students. We need only think of the biomedical science program, which boasts the highest admission averages of the entire campus. Our students benefit from an education that is carefully crafted to not only meet the demands of both the job market and professional programs, but also stresses the importance of fundamental, knowledge-based learning.

The content of our programs is constantly being updated to reflect the latest scientific and technological advances. As a result, in September 2011, a new program was introduced at the Faculty of Science: the Honours BSc in Financial Mathematics and Economics, along with a new option: the extended French stream.

OUR RENOWNED RESEARCHERS AND TEACHERS
Our professors are experts and active researchers whose excellence and passion for science greatly contribute to the reputation of the University of Ottawa, both nationally and internationally. In a 2012 national report, uOttawa ranked fourth in Canada in natural sciences and engineering, and we are extremely proud of our position as one of Canada’s leading science faculties.

Our renowned researchers continue to win prestigious awards that honour not only their research but also their teaching! Indeed, it is not uncommon for some professors to receive both teaching AND research awards. Our philosophy is simple: research and teaching go hand-in-hand.

OUR SUPPORT STAFF
No description of the Faculty of Science would be complete without mentioning our support staff. These people clearly play a key role in our faculty, and we could not get by without this team and their remarkable dedication. Their motto is brief but exceptionally important: “students come first”.

HIGH-QUALITY FACILITIES
The teaching laboratories in the biosciences complex are some of the best in North America. Once they arrive on campus, our students have the opportunity to work with leading-edge equipment, whether they study biology, chemistry, earth sciences, physics or biochemistry.

PROUD OF OUR ATMOSPHERE
Our students are at the centre of our mission. There is a strong sense of collegiality and goodwill among everyone in our faculty. As dean, this very special atmosphere is my greatest source of pride.
