Modern Languages and Literatures

Familiarity with at least one other culture is an essential component of an educated person’s background. The study of another language opens the door to new information and knowledge and develops a deeper understanding of one’s own language and culture. In an age of global communication and trade, the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures offers a variety of courses on the language, literature and culture of some of the most important countries in the world.

Our courses are designed to provide a thorough competence in the target language as it is spoken and written in the present day as well as a critical appreciation of diverse aspects of the literature and civilization of the relevant countries. For example, students can take courses on Spanish culture since Roman times and Spanish American civilization from the Incas and the Aztecs; on Arab culture and civilization; on Italian heritage in North America; on Spanish, Latin American, German, Italian, Russian and Polish cinema; on Celtic literature and folklore and also on second-language acquisition. Furthermore, students can immerse themselves in the language of their choice by studying overseas. Literature courses for the more advanced students include some major world authors, such as Tolstoy and Dostoevski, Calderón and Calvino, Goethe and Borges.

The department strives to enrich the cultural and social milieu of the University and the community through a variety of events related to the languages and cultures that it teaches. Some of these activities include Cinema International and the Ambassador lecture series. It has also hosted a large number of international conferences with guest speakers from all corners of the world.

The majority of the courses offered by the department are open to all students or may be taken as part of one of the following programs:

BA with concentration in German, Italian, Russian or Spanish; BA with honours in Spanish or Russian; master’s and doctorate in Spanish; honours baccalaureat in international studies and modern languages (offered jointly with the Department of Political Science); master’s in Spanish translation (offered jointly with the School of Translation and Interpretation).

Our graduates bring to the marketplace an ability to understand, speak, write and think critically in another language. These skills are increasingly a prerequisite for a rewarding career. Graduates with a degree in a foreign language may seek employment in elementary and secondary schools, the diplomatic service, media and foreign news services, translation, transportation, travel and tourism, publishing, foreign and overseas agencies, provincial and federal government, international law, finance, business and industry. Some use their degree as a stepping stone to postgraduate work in the same or related field in order to become University teachers. The growth of tourism and the strong commercial ties between Canada and the countries of Europe and Latin America make a knowledge of the language and culture of those countries increasingly useful.

Modern language courses (ALG, ARB, ESP, ITA, RUS, etc.)

Registration in a language course

The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures reserves the right to refuse registration in language courses to:

- students who have attended high schools where the language of instruction is the same as the language taught in the course;
· students whose knowledge of the language is above the level expected in the course in question.

If it becomes clear that a student registered in such a course meets either of the above criteria, then the student will be required to either withdraw from the course or take a placement test.

Enrolment in two different levels of a language program during the same academic session is not permitted, except for literature and culture courses.

A student may not register in a lower-level language course after successfully completing one at a higher level.

Language classes are not open to auditors.

Placement test

Students who wish to take a language course for which they lack either the prerequisite or an appropriate equivalence must write a placement test. The Department reserves the right to place students at their proficiency level in accordance with the result of their placement test. Placement is also subject to availability. The test serves to determine only the level of proficiency and is not a course equivalence.

To write a placement test, please go to the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, Monday to Friday, between 9 am and 12 am.
