Health Sciences

Preamble
In April 1999, participants in the Faculty’s planning exercise decided it was necessary to create a bachelor of health sciences program. Recognizing, however, that health professionals are required to work more and more with multidisciplinary teams, and realizing that several faculties have a role to play at this level, the Faculty of Health Sciences studied the relevance of having other faculties help design such a program, as well as their actual interest in doing so.

Special characteristics of the program
The program will be offered by the Faculty of Health Sciences, in both English and French. It will also be interdisciplinary. Its aim is to provide general training in the individual health, in population health and in the operation of Canada’s health-care system.

The program is designed especially for students wishing to move on to a second undergraduate degree requiring university prerequisites (ex. Medicine), or wishing to enter graduate studies programs in audiology, speech-language pathology, physiotherapy, occupational therapy or human kinetics. In addition, students in the bachelor health sciences will be able to complete the requirements of a concentration in Gerontology (offered in French only) or a certificate in Business Administration if they wish.

Program objectives
Graduates in health sciences will be recognized for their ability to reason critically, for their ability to see humans holistically, for their theoretical, scientific and ethical background, and for their ability to see how Canada’s socio-political context weighs heavily in health care.

Specifically, graduates of the bachelor’s program in health sciences will have:
- acquired the knowledge needed for admission to bachelor’s degrees requiring certain undergraduate university credits or to professional health-sciences programs offered beyond the bachelor’s level;
- acquired an understanding and appreciation of the roles and duties performed by health-care professionals;
- become acquainted with the many dimensions of human beings (physical, psychological, social and environmental) that effect health;
- understood the general health needs of a rapidly evolving Canadian society, as well as the specific needs of various populations within that society;
- learned to use research and data-analysis methods allowing them to progress in health-sciences research program;
- acquired the knowledge needed to organize, manage and assess health services;
- recognized the socio-political dimensions of health and the impact of those dimensions on the health services offered to various populations;
- discovered the importance of moral, ethical and legal principles in decision-making;

- identified basic principles in communications and helping relations.
