Physiotherapy

Philosophy
The physiotherapy curriculum is based on a systemic perception of human beings, health and physiotherapy practice.
Because of the multidimensional nature of physiotherapy, many sciences contribute to its curriculum: general sciences, biomedical sciences, motion sciences, social sciences and clinical sciences.

The instruction given deals as much with the primary and secondary prevention levels as with the tertiary level. Consequently, the clinical training component offers different learning experiences within a variety of training environments such as hospitals, private clinics, schools, industries, community service centres and clinics.

The program’s goal is to train bilingual professionals who can carry out on their own the duties of a physiotherapist: service production and administration, research, education and consultation.

The program favours a multidisciplinary approach to training. Therefore, physiotherapy students take courses with students from other programs such as nursing, occupational therapy, psychology, and human kinetics.

Objectives
The physiotherapy curriculum has nine overall objectives. Students must have the ability and the will to fulfill these objectives:

1. see their clients as true human beings who interact constantly with their environment and make up a whole - or system - with this environment;

2. make a humane and rational application of their scientific and artistic knowledge to the solving of problems in physiotherapy;

3. assume the responsibility for the administration of physiotherapy services;

4. participate in the social, political and economic events that have an impact on the health and social systems;

5. assume responsibility for their self-evaluation and their personal and professional development throughout their career;

6. contribute to society and to the field of physiotherapy;

7. interact with other groups and individuals to reach the objectives set by physiotherapy services in particular and health services in general;

8. assume their responsibilities when facing the health and service needs of persons involved in the physiotherapy service process;

9. apply moral and ethical principles when making decisions in the practice of physiotherapy.

Baccalaureate of Science in Physiotherapy

145

Program description
The physiotherapy program includes 145 credits, of which 136 are required and 9 are optional. The clinical placements are integrated into the academic program.

Students in the physiotherapy program begin with the study of biological, social and applied sciences, knowledge of health and health systems, professional practice and basic physiotherapy skills. The next phase of study centres on the prevention, assessment and treatment of mobility problems and pain throughout the lifespan. Dysfunction of the musculo-skeletal, respiratory, nervous, and cardiovascular systems is examined and students learn appropriate physiotherapy interventions. Also studied are research, evidence-based practice, education, community work, the helping relationship and the management of physiotherapy services. The clinical placements are an integral part of the program of study and allow the student to apply the knowledge learned from the academic courses in a variety of clinical settings in either the public or private sector.

Courses identified by the PHT course code are exclusively reserved to students in physiotherapy. Clinical fieldwork courses are limited to students who have passed all prerequisites. Because of their dynamic nature and, therefore, their need for revision and change, each program reserves the right to change, cancel or suspend the courses in this calendar.

Degree requirements
The requirements to obtain the B.Sc. (physiotherapy) degree are as follows:

Required courses:
1. Courses outside the discipline - 42 credits
2. Courses within the discipline - 68 credits
3. Clinical placements - 26 credits
