School of Psychology

Psychology is the study of human behaviour and mental processes. An education in the field provides highly sought-after expertise in human development. What's more, psychology relates to virtually every other university discipline, spanning major social and community issues (through social and intercultural psychology) and the basic biological forces within individuals (through neuroscience and neuropsychology), to the processing of information and knowledge (through the cognitive sciences and cognitive psychology).

Through courses, research and readings students focus on a number of areas: development of the person, biological foundations of behaviour, cognitive development and learning processes, perception and cognition, interpersonal relations and psychopathology.

The School of Psychology offers three undergraduate programs and one option: a BA with concentration, a BA honours, option with or without thesis and a BSc honours (with thesis). The purpose of the concentration program is to enable the student to acquire basic knowledge in psychology while completing a general education at the University of Ottawa. The concentration program may be completed on a part- or full-time basis. The purpose of the honours programs is to complete the student’s basic education in general psychology and to prepare them for graduate studies in psychology. The honours programs may be completed on a part- or full-time basis. Students completing an honours degree are not recognized as psychologists by professional associations. This requires a master's or doctoral degree, depending on the province where the profession is practised. However, the honours degrees open doors to certain fields of work in psychology and related sciences (hospitals, clinics, research centres, governments, and other areas). The programs are generally considered equivalent to the honours programs of English teaching universities in Canada and to the various undergraduate degrees of American universities. The programs are also accepted for admission to graduate studies.

The honours BSc in psychology is a program that offers basic training in psychology, viewed as a
behavioural science, with a significant complement of natural science courses. It prepares students
for graduate studies in neuroscience, the cognitive sciences and health sciences.

Students who wish to undertake graduate studies in a Quebec francophone institution may readily tailor their programs to meet the institution's requirements these institutions. Interested students should be aware of these requirements and seek any necessary assistance from the school in planning their programs.
