Whether on campus for a conference, event, or tour, uoPublic allows visitors to easily check emails, browse the web, and stay in touch simply and for free.
You’ve probably already discovered the benefits of free Wi-Fi if you’ve taken advantage of a coffee shop or airport connection before. Leveraging guest Wi-Fi technology enhances operational efficiency and improves the user experience, here’s how:
- Increases accessibility. uoPublic enables campus visitors to easily register and connect to free internet without contacting support staff. The service is available throughout the University campus to support a diverse range of activities like conferences, working groups and special events regardless of where you travel on campus.
- Improves network security. Guest internet access that is separate from the University’s main network, creates a safer digital environment for our community. When faculty and support staff use the eduroam connection and guests use uoPublic, risks of network exploitation and malware infections on our main network are decreased.
- Enhances network service. This free and easily accessed service makes the campus a more welcoming and engaging place for all. At the same time, we can ensure the connection is used appropriately by restricting harmful content or content that degrades the quality of the network. This approach enables a higher quality of service overall and delivers a reliable and secure internet experience.
- Delivers operational efficiencies: The open access of uoPublic allows our teams to be liberated from the many manual and repetitive tasks related to creating separate Wi-Fi connections for individual events. uoPublic is readily available which optimizes time and resources and enables staff to focus on other critical areas of campus technology and user experience.
"uoPublic has significantly improved our operational efficiencies. Previously, we had to create and submit Wi-Fi activation requests for 5 to 10 events daily, which was time-consuming and tedious. For large events, it was even more challenging, since we had to request activations for every building and classroom being used. Now, with uoPublic, everything is already in place and ready to use. This has saved us about an hour per day, per agent (the equivalent of about one full day’s work daily), making the process much more efficient and less demanding on our staff." – Vanessa Lacelle, Lead Coordinator, Event Management
By enhancing network connectivity through uoPublic, the University is fostering innovation, improving efficiencies, and building a more connected and engaged campus community. Stay tuned as we continue our digital transformation!
Note: For a more secure, high-speed connection, uOttawa students, professors or staff, as well as visitors from participating eduroam institutions, should use the eduroam wireless network wherever possible.
