In the fast-paced world of postsecondary education, where academics and research take centre stage, a longstanding uOttawa tradition encourages a healthy work-life balance and community spirit — the Employee Hockey League.

This initiative, which has brought together generations of employees, draws on hockey lovers from various faculties and services to create a dynamic, shared on-ice experience.

From seasoned veterans to enthusiastic beginners lacing up their skates for the first time, the league welcomes employees of all skill levels in a supportive environment where players can learn from each other and grow.

Skill development becomes a shared journey as experienced players offer guidance and tips to newcomers. The camaraderie that develops goes beyond the rink, creating stronger connections among colleagues and often laying the foundation for future workplace collaborations. It’s a unique platform for people to connect outside of their usual professional setting, contributing to a positive, supportive workplace culture.

A melting pot of talents and backgrounds, the league brings together members of the university community who might not have otherwise crossed paths. The interdepartmental interaction not only enhances the work environment but also encourages cross-disciplinary collaboration and innovation.

Run by Recreation and Varsity Sports, the league offers a structured environment with referees and timekeepers. But rather than competitive play, the emphasis is on creating a safe space where everyone feels welcome, regardless of their skill level, gender identity, professional focus or area of work. While teams are set at the beginning of the season, captains will often balance them on the fly to ensure a fair, enjoyable game for all, fostering an environment where love of the sport and networking takes precedence over winning.

Teams often gather on the second floor of the Minto Sports Complex to celebrate a win (losses too!), a great goal or just to follow up with plans for future work collaborations. Some teams have even taken things a step further, with “player of the game” awards focusing on inclusivity and team building.

The Employee Hockey League also contributes to the overall health and well-being of participants. The physical activity is a welcome break from sedentary work routines. It’s a great way to reduce stress, unwind and recharge in a fun, engaging and friendly way. Check out what some of the players have to say!

This league is a shining example of how diverse skill sets can come together to create a thriving, healthy community and promote work-life balance. If you’re interested in learning more, or want to join a team, reach out to our staff or register now
