Ritesh Kotak, JD ’22, was awarded the Young Alumni Award, which recognizes individuals under 40 who have demonstrated significant contributions by an individual in his or her field, whether through professional achievement or community service. Despite having only graduated two years ago, Kotak is already making a tremendous impact in the realms of technology, cybersecurity, and law.

Kotak’s professional journey began in thought public safety, delving into the complex world of cybercrime and emerging technologies. He then transitioned to the private sector, working with ‘Big Tech’ companies on global projects related to Digital Transformation, Cyber Security and Emerging Tech. It was during this time that Ritesh identified a critical gap between technology and the law. Inspired to find solutions to the frequency of breaches, paired with an increased emphasis on privacy and the high cost to access resources to combat cyberbreaches, he decided to pursue a law degree at the faculty.

Inspiration comes from unexpected situations

Kotak earned his Juris Doctor (JD) with a focus on law and technology, deepening his understanding of the legal implications surrounding emerging technologies. His time at the Faculty  was marked by groundbreaking contributions, especially during the challenging times of the global pandemic. As the Lead Tech Fellow, Kotak spearheaded the award-winning program to digitize the operations of the Faculty. His efforts ensured that the faculty remained at the forefront of digital transformation, enhancing the learning experience and operational efficiency during unprecedented times.

“I thought that shifting to a virtual environment would potentially push us apart, but given the leadership at the Common Law Section, we were able to innovate and look at new ways of staying connected,” reflects Kotak.

What ended up happening is that the distance didn’t actually push us apart, but the innovation and commitment brought us closer. We were able to create a very interesting, collaborative opportunity for students but also for faculty members. It also instilled values of hard work, commitment and ‘outside-the-box' thinking.

Technology-based solutions to increase access to justice

In his second year, Ritesh, alongside classmates Ayushi Dave and Ryan Mosoff, co-developed 'jusTech,' an innovative, award-winning platform designed to help small businesses combat cyber breaches. The goal, he says, was “to develop an accessible, economical, and compassionate online space for those disproportionately affected by online harms that accompany e-commerce.”

Kotak's visionary spirit reached new heights in his third year when he played a pivotal role in launching the uOttawa-LeClair VR moot. This trailblazing event positioned the University of Ottawa as the first in Canada—and possibly the world—to host a moot court competition in the metaverse. In the future, virtual reality courtrooms have the potential to make justice more accessible for many. The potential for this technology is limitless as is the positive impact on society.

Bringing legal discourse to the mainstream

Since graduating, Ritesh has continued to excel in his professional career at a London, Ontario law firm. He is a trusted tech and cybersecurity strategist, lawyer, and keynote speaker, who has carved a niche for himself at the intersection of technology and law. His expertise in tech, cybersecurity, and emerging technologies has made him a sought-after voice in mainstream media and a global thought leader. His ability to distill complex technological concepts into accessible insights has made him a valuable contributor to public discourse on the intersection of technology, society, and law. Kotak's insights are frequently sought after by media outlets, and he has become a respected figure in discussions about the regulatory and ethical challenges posed by new technologies.

Despite his busy schedule, he remains a steadfast supporter of the Faculty of Law. He has co-hosted a homecoming gala, he plays a key role in the annual VR moot court competition, and he continues to engage with the university community. His ongoing commitment to his alma mater exemplifies his dedication to fostering the next generation of legal professionals and innovators.

Congratulations Ritesh Kotak. We are proud of your many achievements and eagerly await your next big idea!
