The Faculty of Medicine, together with The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI), are pleased to announce the successful applicants of the 2024 Translational Research Grant (TRG) competition.

Translational research moves novel discoveries in basic biological sciences to practical uses in pharmaceutical or clinical settings. The TRG program promotes translational research and collaboration between basic scientists and clinical researchers, providing seed funding to test new, innovative ideas and facilitating future grant support.

Basic scientists and clinicians across the Faculty and affiliated research institutes teamed up to submit joint applications as co-PIs on specific research projects. Applications were evaluated by an expert committee and the top four applications were awarded matching funds provided by each partner: the basic science department or research institute supporting PhD Scientists, and the clinical department supporting Clinician Scientists.

Congratulations to the recipients of the three grants awarded in the 2024 competition:

  • Daniel Coutu (OHRI/CMM) and Hesham Abdelbary (OHRI/Surgery): Assessing the therapeutic effects of phage therapy on stem cell-mediated skeletal regeneration in a fracture-related infection mouse model
  • Kyoung-Han Kim (CMM/UOHI) and Darryl Davis (Division of Cardiac Surgery/UOHI):Dissecting intercellular communications underlying postoperative atrial fibrillation susceptibility in cardiac surgery patients
  • Emilio Alarcon (BMI/UOHI) and Marc Ruel (Division of Cardiac Surgery/UOHI)Peptide-based materials for scarless surgical repair
  • Alain Stintzi (BMI) and Terry Ng (Medicine): Enhancing survival outcomes in glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) through manipulation of the gut microbiome- A case control study
