Dr. Rebecca Auer, a graduate of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa (MSc 2004, Residency in General Surgery, 2005), embodies this bold spirit. Recognized as one of Canada’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women by the Women’s Executive Network, she is a renowned surgical oncologist, scientist, and leader who refuses to accept the status quo.
But innovation doesn’t happen in isolation.
When Dr. Auer first began her surgery residency, she saw a gap—there was no clear path that allowed surgeons to deeply engage in research. But she didn’t let that stop her. Just like you, she believed in pushing boundaries.
“There was no formal program for incorporating research into surgical training, but I was fortunate to be surrounded by mentors who supported my curiosity,” she recalls. With the right support, doors opened.
Because of the flexibility offered at the University of Ottawa, she pursued both her clinical training and a master’s degree in laboratory science. Imagine the impact when more students and researchers have the same opportunities.
Today, in her roles as a professor at the Faculty of Medicine, surgical oncologist at The Ottawa Hospital and senior scientist at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI), Dr. Auer drives groundbreaking research that redefines medical treatments. Her research explores how surgery affects the immune system and how post-operative treatments can prevent cancer recurrence.
As Executive Vice-President of Research and Innovation at The Ottawa Hospital and CEO and Scientific Director of OHRI, Dr. Auer also integrates research directly into patient care at a broader level, fostering collaboration between researchers, clinicians, and patients.
The partnership between the Faculty of Medicine and The Ottawa Hospital is at the heart of a thriving biomedical research ecosystem that fuels innovation across the region. By combining the academic excellence of the University of Ottawa with the clinical expertise and infrastructure of The Ottawa Hospital, this collaboration accelerates the translation of research into real-world treatments—improving care not just for patients in Ottawa, but across Eastern Ontario and beyond.
With exciting projects underway such as The Ottawa Hospital’s new campus development and the University of Ottawa’s Advanced Medical Research Centre, the National Capital Region will continue to lead the way in shaping the future of medicine and training the next generation of clinician-scientists who will lead transformative change.
Imagine being part of a movement that helps turn today’s challenges into tomorrow’s cures.

“Research is sometimes the best therapeutic option. It allows us to provide innovative treatments and improve patients’ quality of life.”

Her philosophy? The most powerful word in English is ‘yet.’ What seems impossible today can become reality tomorrow—with the right support. Donations from alumni and donors help turn ‘not yet’ into ‘now.’
Innovation isn’t just about medicine—it’s also about responsibility. Dr. Auer is committed to reducing the environmental impact of medical research.
The Auer Lab, which she founded and leads, in collaboration with other cancer research labs, has already taken steps to reduce plastic waste, cut energy consumption, and implement greener practices in the lab. Your support ensures that sustainability remains a priority in research, creating a healthier planet alongside healthier people.
Dr. Auer’s boldness doesn’t stop at medicine. As a leader, she campaigns for greener research and more sustainable medical practices.
“We have a responsibility to reduce our environmental impact, even in scientific laboratories.”
This environmental awareness is an important part of her scientific practice and everyday life. “At home, especially around the dinner table, we talk a lot about sustainability,” Dr. Auer said, adding with a laugh, “My husband did a master’s in environmental studies, and, at the time, he was vice-president of sustainable development at his company. One day, one of my sons said to me, ‘Mom, you save lives, but Dad’s saving the planet!’ It’s hard to compete with that!”
Empowering the Next Generation of Leaders
Dr. Auer is a fierce advocate for women in science and medicine, working to ensure that young women pursuing research careers receive the support they need.
She believes in lifting others up, saying: “We should be encouraging each other more, both for positions and for rewards.”
And you can be part of that encouragement. Your donation today is an investment in bold, fearless innovators who will push the boundaries of medicine for years to come.
