Governor General's Gold Medal in the Humanities – Doctorate

The Governor General's Gold Medal in the Humanities is awarded to the most outstanding doctoral degree recipient in the Humanities.

My SSHRC-funded dissertation positions modernist and contemporary documentary poetics within the wider documentary movement, which supplied governance strategies rooted in the instrumentalization of cultural policy and artistic production.

While completing my doctoral research, I was also involved in the local literary community and with the graduate student union, CUPE 2626. I am a co-founder of Canthius, a magazine and non-profit that promotes equity in Canadian literary publishing and has been recognized by the League of Canadian Poets for its “positive and ongoing impact on poetry in Canada.” Canthius gave me the opportunity to organize with other writers and put the intersectional feminist theories that inform my research into practice.

It is an honour to have my doctoral work celebrated and especially gratifying to see research about poetry recognized at an interdisciplinary level. This award reinvigorates my belief that the arts provide valuable insight into the dynamics of institutional and state power. I am currently working on a book manuscript that builds on my dissertation.

This medal will be motivation in the years to come and speaks to the incredible guidance and encouragement of my supervisors, Jennifer Blair and Robert Stacey, and to the English department’s supportive intellectual community.

Governor General's Silver Medal in the Humanities and Sciences

The Governor General’s Silver Medal to the student with the highest cumulative grade point average in an honours bachelor’s or equivalent program in the humanities or sciences.

Domynik Jacques Huot

I grew up in Sudbury, Northern Ontario, and I devoted a large part of my life to outdoor activities, but also to competitive sports (mainly golf, provincial level martial arts, collegiate badminton and university soccer).

In terms of school, I had a hard time finding my path: I spent one year in studying architecture only to then get a bachelor’s in sport psychology. Still undecided about my career choices, I turned toward geography — a field that interested me, but that I never imagined as a viable career. Geography fuelled my desire to learn, encouraging me to stay open to the possibilities and challenges that life can offer.

This career brought me not only success within my studies, but also let me feel satisfied on a personal level, taught me perseverance and helped me to understand the importance of valuing family and friends just as much as academic success.

Receiving the Governor General’s Gold Medal brings me a deep feeling of accomplishment: this award shows that I can succeed in my true calling, rather than settling for an unrewarding career.
