Designed as an interdisciplinary centre of excellence, the Institute works across campus and collaborates with several faculties—including Arts, Law, Health Sciences, Science, and the Telfer School of Management—to integrate feminist and intersectional perspectives into a wide range of academic fields.
This cross-campus collaboration positions the Institute as a key player in understanding gender dynamics and shaping solutions for a more inclusive world.
For 25 years, the Institute has helped shape a new generation of engaged leaders across disciplines. By bringing feminist and intersectional approaches into the social sciences, law, health sciences, science, and the humanities, it empowers students and researchers to understand and challenge systems of power.
“For 25 years, the Faculty of Social Sciences has proudly educated leaders committed to understanding women’s experiences, challenging sexism, and analyzing the complex dynamics between men and women. Together, we remain dedicated to building a more inclusive and equitable society for all.” Vicky Barham Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences
Over the years, the Institute has launched many initiatives aimed at promoting equity, including:
- Scholarships and mentorship programs to support women students and emerging researchers across various faculties.
- Groundbreaking interdisciplinary research on gender inequality, pay equity, women’s political representation, and gender-based violence.
- Policy guidance in partnership with decision-makers and organizations working to advance gender equality.
The 25th anniversary is also an opportunity to spotlight the voices of women and allies driving change through a series of academic and community events. Through conferences, interdisciplinary panels, and workshops, the University of Ottawa reaffirms its commitment to advancing women’s rights in every sphere of society.
While the past 25 years have brought meaningful progress, much work remains. The university community is invited to continue this collective effort through research, awareness, and action in pursuit of equality.
Together, let’s continue making the University of Ottawa a place where equity is not just taught—but truly lived.
