In today’s fast-paced business landscape, companies have much to gain by partnering with university departments. Among these, the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Ottawa, one of the world’s top universities, stands out as a great choice for collaboration and innovation.

If your organization is eager to adapt and maintain its competitive edge, we have five reasons why you should consider partnering with uOttawa’s Faculty of Engineering to advance your engineering and IT projects.

1. Access a talent pool that is trained with your needs in mind

As the world’s largest bilingual university, ranked 189th in the 2025 QS World University Rankings, the University of Ottawa attracts outstanding students from around the world. Engineering students are trained in both theory and practice to become global changemakers.

From day one, uOttawa’s Faculty of Engineering prepares students for careers in engineering by maintaining strong ties with industry partners and by tailoring its curriculum to meet their needs. You can tap into this talent pool to fuel your organization’s growth and success through our internships and our co-op program, the fifth largest in Canada.

We have improved our co-op hiring process to make it easier for employers and to better prepare our students for graduation. What’s more, as a co-op employer, your organization can get funding to hire a uOttawa student

2. Innovate through high-impact research partnerships

Why not make the most of the world-class research conducted at the Faculty of Engineering. Our brilliant teams of researchers and students are constantly pushing the boundaries of technology and knowledge to address real world problems.

For example, uOttawa Engineering postdoctoral researcher Professor Mathieu de Lafontaine and Vice-Dean of Research Karin Hinzer, who holds the University Research Chair in Photonic Devices for Energy, initiated a revolutionary breakthrough that heralds a new era in miniaturizing electronic devices.

By partnering with uOttawa Engineering on innovative research such as this, you can leverage a wealth of insights, expertise, cutting-edge technology, and funding from granting agencies.

3. Mitigate your R&D investment risks

By working with the Faculty of Engineering, you gain cost-effective access to several word-class research facilities and labs to accelerate your product development. You can either contact our expert researchers to work on your behalf or access our facilities to carry out your own work directly.

To illustrate risk-sharing between industry and academia, professors Mehrdad Sabetzadeh and Shiva Nejati, from uOttawa’s School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, describe the partnership with the Sedna Research Lab they lead.

“Industry can de-risk their R&D investment by calling on universities because risk-taking is part of what we do,” says Mehrdad. “As a research group, we like to solve problems,” adds Shiva. The lab specializes in Internet of Things (IoT) research and has helped provide in-depth analysis and evidence-based solutions to a growing number of tech companies, including RabbitRun Technologies, Cheetah Networks and Stratosfy.

4. Challenge young minds to solve your pressing problems

At uOttawa Engineering, design courses are run as hands-on, team-based introductions to engineering design for engineers and computer scientists. Topics include design thinking, engineering design process, prototyping, engineering economics, safety, ethics, and project management.

These provide our students with the design skills they need to design products that solve significant global challenges. Client-based projects are a vital component of our design courses, and of competitions such as Design Day, which give students opportunities to learn and work in multidisciplinary teams and apply the theories they learned in class to key design issues.

Why not define a challenge by identifying a pressing need or problem your organization faces and let our students provide you with implementable solutions.

5. Build partnerships that are tailored to your needs

There are many ways to collaborate with the Faculty of Engineering at uOttawa. Our partnership team can discuss research, educational, design, philanthropic, and sponsorship opportunities to build a partnership model that achieves your goals. We want to work with you to solve real problems, drive innovation and develop your workforce, while providing you with a good return on your investment.
