Guest contributor to The Gee, Anaïs Rezaique, who is a fourth-year student in international development and globalization, and has been International House coordinator since 2022, describes how the student-run iHouse is a “sanctuary” for international students and helps build cultural bridges.

Nestled in the heart of the Jock Turcot University Centre, the International House (iHouse) is more than just a service: it’s a sanctuary for international students navigating life at the University of Ottawa. Acting as a “home away from home,” iHouse offers a space where students can connect, celebrate their cultures and integrate into Canadian society while creating lasting memories.

For students like Samar Mohamed, a fourth-year international management student from Djibouti, iHouse became a vital resource soon after her arrival in Ottawa.

“I remember feeling so overwhelmed during my first weeks here,” Samar recalls. “But stepping into the iHouse changed everything. I instantly felt a sense of belonging—the team was incredibly welcoming. Since then, I’ve attended cultural events, joined workshops, and even found study buddies through their initiatives. iHouse helped me grow, both personally and professionally. Today, I’m proud to say that I’ve become a leader on campus, hosting events for various clubs and serving as an executive member of the Telfer Student Association.”

Whether you need guidance with housing, tips on navigating health care, or just a quiet spot to study, iHouse is the go-to place for students looking to thrive, both socially and academically.

Events that bring students together

From cultural celebrations to networking fairs, iHouse events foster connections between international and Canadian students. One standout event is the monthly Chai & Yap, which offers students a casual space to share stories over warm cups of tea.

“I attended Chai & Yap in October,” says Adina, a first-year engineering student from Rwanda. “It’s amazing how quickly strangers can become friends when you’re sharing chai. Events like these make adjusting to a new country and a new academic setting so much easier.”

A cultural bridge

Anaïs says that the “transition from high school to university is a significant step, but for international students, it’s often more than that: it’s their first time living far from home, adapting to a new culture and building a support network from scratch.” Acting as a cultural bridge, iHouse fosters connections between international and Canadian students to address the challenges of cultural differences and create an inclusive space where everyone can thrive.

The International House has been a vital part of the University of Ottawa’s community for over 40 years, serving as a cornerstone of support for international students across generations. Sponsored by the University of Ottawa Students’ Union (UOSU), iHouse fosters the well-being of international students by hosting events and providing resources to help them feel seen and to assist them in adjusting to life in Canada.

“This is why iHouse exists,” says Anaïs. “It’s not just about providing services; it’s about ensuring that no student feels alone during such a critical period of change. For instance, during World Cup screenings, we saw students from all corners of the globe come together, united by a shared love of the game. National jerseys were swapped, friendships were formed, and for one incredible month, we saw our mission brought to life: connecting Canadian and international students through shared experiences.”

To help this inclusive community grow, it’s crucial for more students to learn about iHouse and its mission. Here’s what you can do to help:

Through these efforts, iHouse will continue to build a welcoming and vibrant community for everyone at uOttawa.
