Dr. Jasmin’s tenure has been defined by transformational change. One of his proudest achievements is the faculty’s first-ever strategic plan, a roadmap that has guided the institution through significant challenges and propelled it toward a bold and ambitious future. “A strategic plan isn’t just a document,” Dr. Jasmin explains. “It’s a rallying point. It provides a vision that inspires our team to focus on what we can achieve rather than the obstacles in our way.”
Another key accomplishment is the financial health of the faculty. “When I took on this role in 2018, we were facing serious budget cuts,” he recalls. “It was clear that we needed new revenue streams to support our ambitions.” Under his leadership, the Faculty of Medicine launched innovative funding initiatives, strengthened philanthropic efforts, and ensured financial stability. “Now, we’re not just balanced—we’re generating surpluses. That’s a great place to leave the faculty,” he adds with a smile.
Perhaps what Dr. Jasmin is most proud of is the exceptional leadership team he has built. “The strength of any institution lies in its people,” he says. “We now have a group of vice deans, associate deans, department chairs, school directors and senior staff who are talented, committed, and ready to take the faculty to even greater heights.”

His ability to unite people around a common goal has been a defining trait of his leadership. From bringing together key players and partners to create the Ottawa Academic Health Network, to fostering collaboration among researchers through broad-based initiatives, Dr. Jasmin has consistently championed a culture of connection and shared purpose.
Those who have worked closely with him speak of a leader who not only inspired but empowered. “Dr. Jasmin’s visionary and inclusive leadership has been truly transformative,” says Gillian Lord, Director of Strategic Planning and Implementation at the Faculty of Medicine. “His ability to bring people together, empower diverse voices, and drive meaningful change has had a profound impact on faculty, students, and staff. His mentorship continues to inspire those fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to work alongside him, shaping a culture of excellence, innovation, and shared success.”

“Bringing people together to create a shared vision—that’s what I do best. And it’s what I will continue to do in my next chapter.”
Dr. Bernard Jasmin
— Former Dean of the Faculty of Medicine (2018–2025)
“Bringing people together to create a shared vision—that’s what I do best,” he says. “And it’s what I will continue to do in my next chapter.”
That next chapter is a return to his first passion: research. As he steps away from the dean’s office, he’s stepping back into his lab, where he will continue his groundbreaking work on neuromuscular diseases, including myotonic dystrophy, skeletal muscle atrophy and Duchenne muscular dystrophy. “I’m thrilled to be back in the lab full-time,” he shares enthusiastically. “The work we’re doing now has real potential for therapeutic breakthroughs, and I’m excited to see where it leads us.”
As Dr. Jasmin transitions out of his leadership role, Dr. Melissa Forgie takes on the role of Interim Dean. A highly respected leader within the faculty, she brings deep experience and a fresh perspective to the position. Dr. Jasmin has no doubt that she is the right person to carry the faculty forward. “Melissa is exceptionally well-prepared for this role,” he says. “She’s bright, knowledgeable, dedicated, and has an energy that’s truly contagious. I have complete confidence in her.”
Dr. Forgie, in turn, expresses gratitude for Dr. Jasmin’s leadership and the strong foundation he has built. “Bernard has been a visionary leader, inspiring all of us with his ability to bring people together and drive meaningful change,” she says. “His impact on the faculty is immeasurable, and we are all grateful for his dedication and passion.”
University of Ottawa President Jacques Frémont also acknowledges Dr. Jasmin’s outstanding leadership. “Having a strong Dean of Medicine means a university president can sleep well at night,” Frémont says. “Dr. Jasmin has provided exceptional leadership, navigating financial challenges, the pandemic, and global events with confidence and skill. The Faculty of Medicine is stronger today because of him.”
As he moves into this next phase of his career, Dr. Jasmin remains deeply invested in the future of the Faculty of Medicine. To alumni and donors, he offers a message of pride and encouragement. “The Faculty of Medicine is stronger than ever,” he says. “Our rankings continue to rise, and our reputation is growing nationally and internationally. Our alumni should be proud to be part of this institution. And for those considering investing in our future—know that your support is going to a faculty that is young, ambitious, and uniquely positioned for success.”
While his tenure as dean may have come to an end, his influence will continue to be felt for years to come. Whether in the lab, mentoring students, or lending his voice to new initiatives, Dr. Bernard Jasmin remains an integral part of the University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Medicine. His story is one of leadership, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to making a difference.
