When I began my internship in Accra, Ghana, at the Center for Sustainable Transformation (CeST), I knew I was embarking on an unforgettable experience. Over the weeks, my mission has turned out to be an incredible adventure, offering opportunities for learning, cultural discovery, and personal growth. Halfway through my internship, I look back to assess what I have accomplished and learned so far. My work at CeST allows me to contribute to meaningful projects related to the environment, education for sustainable development, and environmental awareness. One of my main tasks is to support the Eco-Schools and Eco-Campus initiatives, which gives me the opportunity to write informative articles on environmental issues, highlighting both local and global perspectives.
My involvement in the "Young Reporters for the Environment (YRE)" program is undoubtedly my favorite part of this experience. I am contributing to research for the radio show “The SDG Hub”, an exciting opportunity to delve deeper into the Sustainable Development Goals. Stepping completely out of my comfort zone has given me ample room for personal growth.
Living in Accra as a foreigner has opened my eyes to the cultural richness of this city. I was warmly welcomed by my host family, and my integration was quick, making me feel like a full-fledged member of the family from my very first days.
Of course, there have been challenges along the way—moments when all I wanted was a good hot chocolate from Tim Hortons. Tim Hortons... I miss you. However, these challenges have been opportunities for learning and growth. I’ve had to adapt to the coffee Accra has to offer for now, and it’s not so bad after all. I’ve also taken pride in my accomplishments, whether in my research or in my ability to adapt to new situations.
As I look ahead to the second half of my internship in Accra, I am excited to continue contributing to CeST’s initiatives and to further explore this fascinating city. My experience so far has been enriching in many ways, and I am grateful for the opportunity to be part of such meaningful work.
