Welcome week
A crowd dancing with raised hands.
It’s time to celebrate. Welcome Week at uOttawa promises a colourful range of high-energy activities to help you forge new friendships and discover the info you need to start your university experience off right. Get ready to make lifelong memories. Here’s a sample of what’s in store.

Laser tag: Cry havoc and let slip

Experience the ultimate fusion of strategy, teamwork and excitement on Wednesday, August 30 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the SITE building. Each game will last for 10 minutes, to make sure everyone gets a chance to play.

Free stuff at our thrifting pop-up party

Sustainability is a big focus here and one of our great success stories is the uOttawa Free Store. Drawing on that old saying that one person’s trash is another person’s treasure, we reuse, reduce and recycle by giving away stuff that students leave behind in residence. We’re turning thrifting into a pop-up party game at University Square on Friday, September 1, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Bond with new friends by dressing up in thrifted clothes and get a chance to win an instant Fujifilm camera for best outfit. Take what you want for free! See some great past Free Store finds.

Enjoy Endless Summer: Support your women’s Gee Gees teams

Get ready to fully embrace the Gee-Gees spirit by attending a thrilling game or two on Saturday, September 2 at Matt Anthony Field. Cheering for the Gee-Gees in a sea of supporters wearing garnet and grey is a great way to meet new people. We’re all on the same team! The women’s soccer team plays Trent University at 1 p.m., followed by the women’s rugby team versus Université Laval at 4 p.m. Watch one game or do the double header. Free popsicles!

Drag show and bingo night

Don’t miss this colourful night of laughter, love and inclusivity hosted by Adrianna Exposée. A drag show featuring four performances and bingo games is happening Tuesday, September 5, from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. at University Square. Play bingo, win prizes and have some rainbow popcorn and cotton candy. Beyond the fun, the night aims to promote LGBTQ2+ advocacy and awareness. Presented in collaboration with the Pride Centre.

Blockbuster movie nights

Dress up for a screening of Barbie in English at Lansdowne Cinema on Wednesday, September 6, from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. A shuttle bus will take you to the cinema from uOttawa, but you must register to attend. Cost is $10. (Sign up now — there are only 200 spots!). There’ll be prizes for best costume and winners of a quiz. The French movie night on Friday, September 8, from 8 p.m. to midnight, will feature a screening of Les trois mousquetaires d’Artagnan at the Bytown Cinema. You must register and the cost is $5.

DJ dance party — uOshow

uOshow is the main event of Welcome Week. Dance the night away as some of Canada’s top electronic dance music DJs bring the euphoria to University Square on Thursday, September 7, from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. Magician Nic Gignac will warm up the crowd at 7 p.m., followed by DJ sets by DJ KidCrayola from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m., Sam and Matt (otherwise known as STYLO) from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. and then headliner PAQS — uOttawa social sciences alum Philippe Paquette — from 10 p.m. to 11 p.m. Check future editions of the Gee for more details.

So don’t be bummed that your summer’s nearly over. There’s plenty to look forward to during our Welcome Week.
