We’re delighted to announce that the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) facility management team has been named the Health and Safety Leader for September 2024!

The NMR Core Facility operates four labs on campus and serves hundreds of users. The primary hazard in these labs is the presence of strong magnetic fields, which are invisible but comparable in strength to MRI magnets used in hospitals. Although proper signage is posted at all entrances to warn people of the associated health and safety risks, it was not entirely clear to users how far away from the NMR equipment they should stay.

In response, the team took steps to improve the signage at the NMR Core Facility. Led by Jordan Labelle (specialist, Facilities planning and logistics), Sean Kirkwood (senior manager, Faculty of Science Infrastructure), and Patrick Szell, PhD (NMR facility manager), these efforts resulted in the installation of clear and effective floor decals to indicate the presence of stray magnetic fields. The results have been very positive, with users now taking greater care to avoid entering areas with stray magnetic fields while carrying magnetic objects (e.g., watches, tools credit cards).
