Martin Bernard Syron was known as a visionary and a born leader. He was also a proud uOttawa law alumnus (LLB ’96) and a philanthropist. Mr. Syron was inducted into the University of Ottawa’s Common Law Honour Society in 2007, the highest honour given to our alumni.
A piece of Mr. Syron’s legacy can still be seen today on the uOttawa campus in the building he helped refurbish at 600 King Edward, the Bernard Syron Law Student Centre. Launched as a much-needed space for Faculty of Law graduate students to meet and study, the building is now also home to the uOttawa Public Law Centre. Professors, staff and students here will always be grateful for his generous gift.
Mr. Syron was also a generous supporter of other organizations, including St. Michael’s Hospital, Bridgepoint and the Toronto General Hospital.
He passed away on October 11, 2023, in Toronto, where he had built a wonderful life with his family and excelled in a long career, which included a decades-long stay with Cara Operations, one of Canada’s leading integrated restaurant companies and the country’s largest operator of full-service restaurants.
Our thoughts are with Mr. Syron’s wife, Mildred, daughters Karra, Julie and Kristi, and all their family members. We are proud to call Martin Bernard Syron one of our own.
